Ferrero Küsschen

Ferrero Küsschen is the first hazelnut praline on the German chocolate market and it’s all about friendship. It is the number 1 chocolate/sweet used to express friendship, and has been part of friendship building since 1968.

The client was looking for a package design and chocolate figures that resembled Ferrero’s values; reliability, togetherness, authenticity and positivity during Christmas time.

The result was a dynamic collection of 8 different designs. I was inspired by those friendships that complement you even though they are very different from you. That’s why these pieces were created with the idea that no matter from what angle you see the product, there will always be another Ferrero that fits perfectly, complementing it.

Front view

The outline figure of the character is found in here. Its form is half of one of the 4 different geometric shapes I used for the collection: triangle, octagram (star), circle and trapezoid. For each of these figures, you will find 2 characters that share the same “half” shape as an outline. So when they join side by side, they create the complete geometric figure contour.

For example, in this case our character is Santa’s hat (isosceles righ triangle shape), which when joining with its counterpart figure (Christmas tree, also an isosceles right triangle shape), they build an equilateral triangle shape. This when seen by the front view.

Here is where we link the concept that we can have friends very similar to us. You can also go crazy, have some fun and make the match with any of the other characters with a different outline shape (contrasting friendship). That’s up to you! Remember that either way, both options will complement each other, just like friends do!

Although this product story was created to be consumed and represented in pair, it also works perfectly standing out on its own. Also, the interaction and creativity of this collection allows many display possibilities in stores! Just think about all the different combinations you can create and the multiple ways this chocolate can be exhibited! The “Wir sind vereint” collection will definitely attract attention and will quickly differentiate itself from anything else on the market.

For the front view texture, I designed a modern geometric pattern, following the 4 basic shapes. To finish completing the product’s history, all the colors that were used are aligned perfectly with the brand.

Side view

Being this the first hollow chocolate figure of the brand, and following up with the concept and value of “togetherness”, I wanted to have an element that would link the product with the original Ferrero Küsschen classic package. That’s why the side view has half of its characteristic hexagonal shape. Product’s figure result is a merge with the best of both worlds. A representative piece of the brand witha modern and fun twist to it. All of this in its branded color orange and with a very doable shape for a chocolate figure!

You can see a very clean and minimal character to contrast the heavy texture from the front view. Also, it was very important for me to make it genderless, this makes it easier to connect with the audience. Its face reflects happiness and gratitude, since those are the common emotions we tend to feel at Christmas when surrounded by our friends. For the mouth, I specially designed an icon consisting of a mix of two arms (symbolizing a hug) and a smile. Make sure to zoom in so you can see this in full detail! This element is also found in the logo of the collection name to finish connecting the story.

“Wir sind vereint” collection in German, and the translation “Bound to you” in English, which celebrates friendship during Christmas time.

Behind the scenes

Every element on this project was specifically created from an strategic level, following a Design Thinking process. Ensuring a great experience for the consumer, along with an interactive design completely aligned to Ferrero’s brand.
